ARMEENSE CINEMA
22 oktober – 8 november 2009

Van 22 oktober tot en met 8 november presenteert Filmhuis Den Haag een Armeens filmfestival. De Armeense Cinema is niet eenvoudig in enkele zinnen samen te vatten. Het ontstaan en de ontwikkeling van de Armeense film heeft plaatsgevonden tegen de achtergrond van meerdere culturele en geografische omstandigheden, in het gebied van de huidige Republiek Armenië en in de wereldwijde Armeense diaspora.

Als gevolg hiervan kan men nauwelijks over één Armeense Cinema spreken. Het is eerder een meerkleurig amalgaam van verschillende thema’s, invloeden en genres. Met de verscheidenheid aan films en regisseurs, enerzijds uit Armenië anderzijds uit de Armeense diaspora, wordt de verscheidenheid van de Armeense Cinema als geheel geïllustreerd. Gelet op deze diversiteit is het misschien beter te spreken van de “Armeense Cinema’s”.

Randprogramma
De films worden vooraf kort ingeleid door kenners van de Armeense cinema en voor een aantal films is een aparte bijeenkomst gepland: NRC recensent André Waardenburg zal spreken over de 18e eeuwse dichter Sayat Nova uit Paradjanovs beroemde film “De kleur van granaatappels” en de vertoning van de film “Komitas” van Don Askarian, wordt ingeleid door een lezing van Heiko Jessayan, die de persoon en betekenis van de Armeense monnik en componist Komitas (1869-1935), de hoofdfiguur uit de film, zal toelichten.

Wij nodigen het publiek uit om kennis te maken met een selectie van Armeense speelfilms, documentaires, korte- en experimentele films en hun rijkdom te ontdekken, zowel in hun eenvoud als in hun complexiteit.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the
Armenian Cultural Association Abovian

It is at once inspiring, complex, and fragile to encapsulate Armenian Cinema in a few short paragraphs. Its origins and many appearances are and have been shaped by geographical and political coordinates near and away from the Armenian homeland, which at one time covered what is now the Republic of Armenia (formerly Soviet Socialist Republic of Armenia) and reached as far west as the eastern provinces of present-day Turkey. Subsequently, Armenian Cinema could not be molded into one entity, covering one genre or one territory. Rather, it became a variegated amalgam of assorted themes, influences, and genres. To speak of one Armenian Cinema, therefore, is fictitious at best and absurd at worst. Within this context, it is thus more constructive to speak of a collection of different Armenian Cinemas.

Consider for instance the rich tableaux of Sergei Parajanov’s mise-en-scènes and his signature style that crossed both geographical and cinematic frontiers. Juxtaposed to Parajanov, consider Egyptian-born Canadian Armenian director Atom Egoyan’s Calendar (1993), with its stunning, picturesque photographs of Armenian churches serving as a backdrop to the merging of diaspora and homeland in a love triangle that echoes the multiplicity of Armenian voices.

The variety of streams among Armenian directors from Armenia, such as Sergei Parajanov, Artavazd Peleshyan, and Harutyun Khachatryan, as well as those from the diaspora, such as Atom Egoyan, Rouben Mamoulian, and Don Askarian, illustrates the diversity of Armenian Cinema as a whole.

The future of Armenian Cinemas is difficult to predict, but as opportunities for contact between the homeland and the diaspora continue to grow, and digital filmmaking evolves, it is hard to conceive that Armenian Cinemas will not reflect this convergence and expand the borders of what, how, and where Armenian Cinemas are today.

We hereby invite both aficionados and dilettantes to delve into a selection of feature films, documentaries, shorts, and experimental films, introduced by connoisseurs, to discover their wealth, in both their simplicity and complexity, and define for themselves a collective, yet nuanced, sense of the term Armenian Cinemas.

Այս փառատոնը կազմակերպվել է Հոլանդահայ Աբովյան մշակութային միության 25-ամյակի առթիվ:

Հոկտեմբերի 22-ից միչև նոյեմբերի 8-ը Հաագայի Ֆիլմհոյս կինոթատրոնում ամեն օր կցուցադրվեն հայկական կինոյի ֆիլմեր:

Հայկական կինոն զարգացել է զանազան մշակութային և աշխարհագրական միջավայրում, ինչպես այսօրվա Հայաստանի Հանրապետության տարածքում, այնպես էլ աշխարհասփյուռ հայության բնակավայրերում: Դրանից բխում է բազմազան թեմաների, ազդեցությունների և ժանրերի շարք:

Հայ կինոռեժիսյորների, ինչպես Համո Բեկնազարյանի, Սարգիս Փարաջանյանի, Հարություն Խաչատրյանի կամ սփյուռքահայ Ռուբեն Մամուլյանի, Ատոմ Էգոյանի, Էրիկ Նազարյանի ստեղծագործական միջավայրի այլազանության հետևանքով ստեղծվել է բազմատեսակ հայկական կինո: Այդ իսկ պատճառով երևի ավելի ճիշտ է խոսել ոչ թե հայկական կինոյի այլ կինոների մասին:

Այս փառատոնում ներկայացված են 18 ֆիլմ: Դրանք խաղարկային լիամետրաժ և վավերագրական ու փորձնական կարճամետրաժ ֆիլմեր են` իրենց թե պարզության և թե բարդության հարստությամբ:

Փառատոնին կից դասախոսություններով հանդես կգան Անդրեյ Վարդենբուրգը Փարաջանյանի «Նռան գույնը» ֆիլմի, Պետեր վան Բյուրենը Խաչատրյանի «Սահման» ֆիլմի մասին, Հայկո Եսայանը Կոմիտասի մասին` Ասկարյանի «Կոմիտաս» ֆիլմի ցուցադրման առնչությամբ, Թինա Բաստաճյանը իր «Դեպի այգեստան» ֆիլմի և Մարի-Աուդ Պարոնյանը Էգոյանի «Օրացույց» ֆիլմի մասին:
